Librarian/Reading Specialist

Yellowstone Academy

Reports to:  Lower School Principal

Full-time, Exempt

11-Month Calendar

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Master’s degree preferred in Library Sciences or similar
  • Five years’ experience teaching in content area
  • Valid/Current Texas Teacher Certification in content
  • Lead Teacher experience at Yellowstone or other School, preferred but not required

LIBRARIAN DUTIES

Yellowstone is committed to offering students a comprehensive library experience. The Librarian will:

  • Supervise and manage the school library/media center.
  • Purchase and catalog books for library collection.
  • Manage the system of processing and shelving library materials.
  • Provide services and resources that allow students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information to solve problems.
  • Serve as teacher, materials expert, and curriculum adviser to ensure that library/media center engages with instructional programs of the school.
  • Continue work as a Reading Specialist by conducting small group and individual learning sessions with students in the Library space.

READING SPECIALIST DUTIES

The Reading Specialist duties include working with students in grades 1 – 5 who have been identified as needing intensive intervention.  The students will be selected based on MAP performance as well as running record reading levels.  Student progress will be monitored, and support will be prioritized based on need.  Ultimately, the goal is to support student growth by 1.5 grade levels over the course of the school year.

  • Use research-based reading materials to provide instructional reading intervention for qualifying students who struggle with reading.
  • Assist in adapting intervention materials to enhance student literacy and oral language development.
  • Compile intervention data gathered from instructional sessions and share with teachers, the Instructional Support Team, the Director of Student Achievement, and Principal as needed.
  • Organize and administer materials for intervention that are aligned with student performance.
  • Meet regularly with grade level teams and vertical planning teams to share best practices, develop intervention strategies, and collaborate on lesson plans and instruction.
  • Participate in training and advising of intervention personnel to ensure alignment of student activities, curriculum, and plans for student growth.
  • As needed, plan and supervise assignments for instructional aides and classroom volunteers.
  • Seek out and receive ongoing training to deepen skill and knowledge related to the science of reading, small group instruction, intervention, and related needs.
  • Perform additional job-related duties as assigned.

ADMIN DUTIES

This position will play a critical role in supporting the administrative work of the school.  Which can include supporting arrival, dismissal, and other duties as assigned.  Testing coordination, training and roll-out of technology and related programing.  Leading related sessions during staff professional development days.

 

Physical Effort

This position may require prolonged periods of walking, standing, sitting, stooping, keyboarding, fine and gross manipulation, kneeling and speaking.
