Lead School Counselor

Yellowstone College Prep

Reports to:         Principal


Qualifications:    Complete a school counselor preparation program: Master’s degree required (48-hours minimum); Minimum 2 years of classroom experience; Texas Counselor Certification

Organizaton Overview

Yellowstone College Prep operates on a beautiful Third Ward campus built in 1927 that is less than half a mile from downtown Houston. As part of its unique program, YCP is co-located with Yellowstone Academy, a private Christian school that serves students in preK3 through 5th grade. This innovate public/private hybrid is the first of its kind in the state of Texas. These two schools will operate through a shared services agreement as they leverage the Academy’s twenty years of success and expand to serve 750 students in pre-K through 12th grade, by 2026.


Primary Responsibilities

Development and Management of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program

The Counselor will:

  • Provide responsive services to students

  • Provide community resources to parents

  • Discuss the comprehensive school counseling program with the school administrator

  • Develop and maintain a written plan for effective delivery of the comprehensive school counseling program and current individual school data

  • Communicate the goals of the comprehensive school counseling program to education stakeholders

  • Maintain current and appropriate resources for education stakeholders

    • Maintain career resources, college and scholarship information, parent/guardian resources, teacher resources and community resources


Delivery of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program

Guidance Curriculum:

  • Provide leadership and collaborates with other educators

  • Support teachers in developing and delivering classroom guidance activities and lesson plans

  • Implement developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals

  • Conduct classroom guidance lessons such as character education

  • Conduct small and large group activities based on the guidance curriculum

Individual Student Planning:

  • Assist all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career, personal/social skills, goals, and plans

  • Conduct counseling sessions with students

  • Appropriately guide students in developing goals based on individual data and other relevant information

  • Accurately and appropriately interpret and utilize student data

  • Collaborate with parents/guardians, and educators to assist students with educational and career planning

  • Send written communication to parents/guardians and teachers regarding student progress


Other Administrative Responsibilities

The Counselor will:

  • Help students develop post-secondary educational plans in accordance with their interests, abilities and career plans

  • Assist students with the completion of college admissions applications

  • Organize and promote standardized assessment opportunities and interpret test results to students and/or parents, upon request

  • Assure that appropriate and  accurate information is maintained in each student’s permanent, cumulative record

  • Accurately evaluate student transcripts

  • Provide counsel about college recruitment practices and admissions deadlines

  • Implement PGP and endorsement pathways

  • Devise student scheduling and assist with master schedule planning

  • Implement and coordinate national school programs like Red Ribbon Week etc.

  • Administer and coordinate standardized testing

  • Attend ARD meetings as necessary

  • Assist in the development of a School Assessment Program and the interpretation of testing and assessment results related to career guidance

  • Continue professional growth and development

  • Other duties as assigned by Administration

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
