Safety Specialist
Reports to:
Safety Superintendent
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary safety contact for SPP3 and Addis personnel.
- Lead construction safety efforts for new plant construction at SPP3 and Addis.
- Supervise contract safety personnel assigned to construction projects.
- Provide safety support and coverage for turnarounds
- Develop new training material and edit existing safety programs
- Conduct employee safety training for various topics
- Participate and lead incident investigations on an as needed basis
- Write confined space entry and hot work permits after verifying isolation and atmospheric conditions
- Review and revise safety procedures on an as needed basis
- Chair the “Shintech Safety Steering Team”
- Be available for callouts in emergency situations.
- Assist in monitoring the application of safety policies, standards, and procedures relating to the safety of employees and the protection of plant facilities.
- Assists in obtaining data for safety statistical reporting of, accidents, incidents, and government reports as required by federal and state regulations.
- Assist in the establishment of safety training programs for all levels of personnel utilizing audio/video equipment techniques, graphics, classroom, field instructions, and written materials.
- Perform safety/health audits of the plant facility to identify personnel hazards and establish compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Researching to stay up to date with the latest safety and health standards.
- Facilitate root cause investigations or 5-why investigations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Knowledge, and Qualifications
Required:
- High School Diploma or GED
- 5+ years of experience in Petrochemical Operations
- Working knowledge of Incident Command System
- Emergency Response (fire brigade, rescue teams, hazmat team, medical)
- Ability to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card
- Knowledge of and experience in process safety, occupation safety and fire protection
- Microsoft Office applications
- Strong written and interpersonal communication skills
Preferred:
- Associate Safety Professional of Certified Safety Professional (ASP or CSP)
- B.S. degree in Engineering, Health or Safety
- Industrial hygiene standards and collecting protocol fundamentals
- Radiation Safety Officer Certification (RSO)
- ISO9001 Experience
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Regularly required to push, pull, bend and perform long periods of standing and walking on cement foundations.
- Occasionally required to stoop and kneel.
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to coordinate the movement of eyes, hands, feet, and fingers to operate tools and equipment.
- Required to be medically certified for respirator and medically fit for duty.
- Use of PPE required in specific areas.
- Must be able to access all plant areas.
- Work in different weather conditions, under emergency conditions, and for prolonged periods of time.
