Logistics Clerk I

Main Warehouse

Position Summary:

  • This procedure describes the basic functions, reporting relationships, authority, and responsibilities of the Logistics Clerk I at S&P USA.
  • The Job Description provides the performance criteria for the position. It also states the Job Requirements as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • The person occupying the position of Logistics Clerk I is responsible for verifying and keeping records on outgoing shipments which include addressing, stamping, and shipping merchandise or materials, and arranging for the transportation of products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Examine shipping bills to obtain the description of freight and classify according to the rate book description.
  • Prepare documents, such as work orders, bills of ladings, and shipping orders to route materials.
  • Determine shipping method for materials, using knowledge of shipping procedures, routes, and rates.
  • Record shipment data, such as weight, charges, space availability, damages, and discrepancies for reporting, accounting, and recordkeeping purposes.
  • Pull finish goods, pre-stage, and load shipping trucks.
  • Prepare freight quotes for customers.
  • Contact carrier representatives to rectify problems such as, damages, shortages, and nonconformance to specifications.
  • Answers mail or telephone inquiries from shippers regarding rates, routing, packing procedures, and interline transportation procedures.
  • Compute amounts for space available, and shipping, storage, and demurrage charges, using calculator and/or price list.
  • Examines bill of lading and files claim with the transportation company for overcharges.
  • Keeps records of freight movements.
  • Secure rates, transit times, and shipper’s responsibilities from international freight forwarder/ocean transportation intermediary on hire.
  • Prepare accurate final commercial invoice, packing list and provide to forwarder.
  • Confer and correspond with freight forwarder on international L/Cs before final bank approval.
  • Back up for Traffic Supervisor when necessary.
  • Keeps records of heat treated wood, and coordinates inspector audits.
  • Observe all company policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to work additional hours to support the organization’s needs.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Logistics Supervisor and/or the Sr Planning Manager.

Educational Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and at least two (2) years of related experience.
  • Intermediate proficiency in the Windows environment, including Word, Excel, and Outlook is required.
  • Forklift certification required; or to be obtained within the initial 90 days of employment.
  • Ability to read and interpret English documents, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate in English (read, write and speak) is required as the overwhelming majority of customers, vendors, co-workers, and suppliers communicate in this language.
  • Reasoning ability is required to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form and to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Mathematical abilities to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, as well as the ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Physical Requirements:

  • The physical demands of the position are listed in accordance with the requirements of the ADA as:

Standing – up to one half of the time.

Walking – up to one half of the time.

Sitting – up to three fourths of the time.

Talking/Listening – up to three fourths of the time.

Use of hands – up to three fourths of the time.

Climb or Balance – up to one fourth of the time.

Stoop or Kneel – up to one fourth of the time.

Reach with arms – up to one fourth of the time.

  • Body movements, lifting and exerting force – 50 pounds.
  • The Senses necessary for the successful performance of this position are:

Hearing – the ability to communicate effectively.

Vision – the ability to record and prepare reports.

  • The ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as eye protection, back protection, ear protection, etc. as necessary or required.
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.

Environmental Conditions:

The environmental conditions of the area in which the person shall perform his/her duties consist of ambient temperature variations, dust, fumes, and elevated noise levels found in a manufacturing environment in this geographical area.
