Director of Literacy Instruction

Yellowstone Schools

Primary Responsibilities

The Director of Literacy is a position that focuses on supporting teachers and instructional leaders to deliver the most rigorous and engaging academic experience for our students. The Director of Literacy will implement school wide systems, structures, and initiatives that will hold all stakeholders to a high bar of academic excellence in our ELA/reading instruction. This will be conducted through observation and feedback, data-driven instruction, curriculum and assessment, professional development, building team culture through strong leadership skills, and contributions to organization-wide initiatives.

Requirements

At least 3 years of Instructional Leadership Experience

Bachelors Required

Masters (not required, but highly recommended)

 

Teacher Support

The Director of Literacy will:

  • Serve as a support to the 3rd -8th grade teaching staff on campus through observations, conferences, professional development sessions, and other intentional interactions;
  • Will ensure technology is used to further enhance and support both teachers and student learning;
  • Work closely with the Principal team to coordinate the resources and training that teachers need to be successful. From deploying curricular resources to brainstorming PLC topics and training, the Director of Literacy will serve as both a sounding board for and implementer of the support structures that are developed to help teachers be successful in their classrooms.
  • Ensuring intervention time is intentional, drives student mastery, and targeted to support in closing the student achievement gap

 

Teacher Coaching/Development

The Director of Literacy will:

  • Working with the Principal team, work closely with hired consultants to support Yellowstone teachers and instructional aides with their instruction, curriculum development, and assessments.
  • Participate in classroom observations and feedback sessions, and facilitate professional development sessions for in-service days and PLCs

 

Data Driven Instruction

  • Facilitate assessment cycles including scheduling, quality assurance of assessment materials, and teacher/student preparation with the support of school leadership
  • Working with the admin team, conduct deep analysis of data in order to lead effective analysis meetings with teachers/content areas
  • Create content area action plans and materials to address data
  • Execute data meetings based on daily student work samples
  • Monitor grade-level progress against assessment cycle benchmarks
  • Conduct daily observations and coaching cycles that lead to teacher and instructional leader development and support implementation of action steps
  • Provide real-time feedback to teachers during instruction

 

Student Academic Performance

The Director of Literacy will:

  • Manage the tracking and analysis of student data to drive increased student achievement and performance;
  • Work closely with the designated staff members to cross manage the RTI process on campus; and
  • Work with teachers and instructional aides to use their student data to drive intervention strategies, lesson planning, and other checks for understanding.

 

Senior Leadership Team Responsibilities

The Director of Literacy will:

  • Participate in leadership team meetings and other related executive decision making;
  • Be ultimately responsible for the well-being of the student body by serving as one of the points of contact for after-school student pick-up and transportation;
  • Work with the senior leadership team to develop all-staff days and other school-wide culture building activities and meetings;
  • Participate in meetings, conferences, and other opportunities to stay well-informed about current best practices in education and continue their own personal and professional development; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
