Controls Technician

We need help expanding our amazing Engineering and Lab team here at our Jacksonville, FL manufactuirng facility. The role described below is pivotal to S&P USA maintaining a leadership position in the US ventilation equipment market, and we need YOUR help. Position Summary:

  • This procedure describes the basic functions, reporting relationships, authority, and responsibilities of the Controls Technician at S&P USA.
  • The Job Description provides the performance criteria for the position. It also states the Job Requirements as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • The person occupying the position of Controls Technician is responsible for working with the Design Engineers, Product Managers and Test Lab Manager to follow projects through UL and testing in the S&P USA Jacksonville Lab. This individual will also be responsible for leading and managing engineering projects as assigned by the Engineering Manager, requiring direct interaction with customers on control and motor related issues.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Needs to be familiar with all applicable standards to insure our Controls meet the standard with variable agencies.
  • Maintains correspondence with all applicable agencies to insure S&P USA regulatory files, catalogs, and other documentation are up to date with all standards requirements.
  • Assist Engineering and Manufacturing departments with new product development, to include product enhancements, lab data feedback and results, enhancements and development and implementation of capital equipment, with respect to the controls function.
  • Assist Purchasing in determining compatibility and interfacing between motors and controls.
  • Work closely with Engineering to resolve issues or concerns.
  • Setup new projects with variable agencies as needed for new products or current product revisions.
  • Coordinate testing with variable agencies and generate budget figures for current and future needs.
  • Become familiar with all areas of the Lab, including Air and Sound testing to serve as a backup or to assist with testing in all areas. This could include assisting with testing on weekend.
  • Performs manual tasks to set up tests.
  • Operates various sophisticated testing and data acquisition equipment. This includes an air and sound testing chamber, computers, data acquisition tools, etc.
  • Assembles and tests prototypes.
  • May require occasional travel as needed.
  • Observe all company policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to work additional hours to support the organization’s needs.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Engineering Manager.

Educational Requirements:

  • Associate’s Degree or Vocational Certificate in Electronics/Electrical Engineering Technology or similar certification or degree; or three (3) years related experience and/or training in a Manufacturing environment.
  • Specific knowledge of: AC/DC motors and related circuits, Variable Frequency Drives, Electrical control circuits including PLC and Relay Logic.
  • General knowledge of: Transformers, Hydraulic Systems, and general mechanical assemblies.
  • Proficient in the Windows environment and industry specific applications required.
  • Ability to write routine reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex spreadsheets, graphs, and diagrams.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to read and interpret English documents, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate in English (read, write and speak) is required as the overwhelming majority of customers, vendors, co-workers, and suppliers communicate in this language.
  • Reasoning ability is required to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Mathematical abilities to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, wattage, amperage, voltage, area, circumference, and volume and to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Physical Requirements:

  • The physical demands of the position are listed in accordance with the requirements of the ADA as:

Standing – up to one fourth of the time.

Walking – up to one fourth of the time.

Sitting – up to three fourths of the time.

Talking/Listening – up to three fourths of the time.

Use of hands – up to three fourths of the time.

Climb or Balance – up to one fourth of the time.

Stoop or Kneel – up to one fourth of the time.

Reach with arms – up to one fourth of the time.

  • Body movements, lifting and exerting force – 50 pounds.
  • The Senses necessary for the successful performance of this position are:

Hearing – the ability to communicate effectively.

Vision – the ability to record and prepare reports.

  • The ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as eye protection, back protection, ear protection, etc. as necessary or required.
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.

Environmental Conditions:

The environmental conditions of the area in which the person shall perform his/her duties consist of ambient temperature variations, dust, fumes, and elevated noise levels found in a manufacturing environment in this geographical area.
