Referral Specialist

Hours 40/week 

General Description

  • Essential Functions: Schedule all outpatient tests and referrals to outside providers. Fax records for precert/referrals. Obtain, verify and follow-up on precerts. Be available for provider needs. Obtain signatures from providers for paperwork.  Fax all paperwork to appropriate location after signed and verify confirmation of faxed document.  Track referrals in our EHR daily.  Follow up on all tests scheduled and make sure patient either went for test or has been rescheduled (send letters to patients or call on phone). Document all contact made with patient, referring source, precert company, etc. in precise, timely manner so that anyone answering phone would be able to give patient message if necessary. Follow-up on all referrals scheduled and make sure consult report is received back from provider. Check insurance eligibility daily.  Obtain prior authorizations, if needed, for medications prescribed to patient.  Follow up on all prior authorizations for medications in a timely manner.  Work seamlessly with clinical and clerical staff to perform all functions of job as needed.  Knowledgeable on how to retrieve patient records from Epic. 
  • Nonessential functions:  Attend daily staff huddles, attend monthly staff meetings, scan documents to patient charts, replace toner cartridges in printers, kitchen duty rotation, maintaining clean and organized work space, notify appropriate staff of low inventory supplies when needed, immediately notify appropriate personnel or IT of any telephone, computer, printer, scanner, or software issues.

Work Experience Requirements

  • Two or more years medical office experience
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills a must
  • Multi-tasking skill
  • Basic computer skills

Education Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • CPT and ICD-10 knowledge (preferred – not required)
  • Medical Assistant (preferred-not required)
