JOB SUMMARYY/SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Responsible for performing and reporting assigned laboratory tests to provide diagnostic data for the treatment and/or diagnosis of disease. Mississippi Licensure as a Medical Laboratory Technician, registered by the American society of Clinical Pathologists or the equivalent is required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Performs routine and special laboratory tests in designated areas of the laboratory.
- Evaluates and reports test results as instructed by test procedure or section procedure.
- Performs reagent and instrument quality control and records results, and reports problems to supervisory personnel as instructed in procedures and assists in resolving them.
- Performs and maintains records of preventive maintenance on assigned instruments.
- Inventories, receives, and stores supplies for assigned areas.
- Obtains specimens from patients for laboratory procedures.
- Contributes to the positive work climate and the overall team effort of the department.
- Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:

- Skill and proficiency in the technical field of Medical Laboratory Technology as required through a two-year Associate of Science Degree as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:
- Mississippi Licensure as a Medical Laboratory Technician, registered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or the equivalent.
EXPERIENCE:
- Knowledge of clinic and departmental policies and procedures normally acquired by 3 months to one year of on-the-job training and orientation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Skill and proficiency in the technical field of Medical Laboratory Technology as acquired through a two-year Associate of Science Degree as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
INTERPERSONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Communication and verbal skills to schedule procedures, report results, and obtain patient information with Nursing personnel on a frequent basis and with physicians and office staff on an occasional basis.
- Interpersonal skills with patients to perform special tests in the Laboratory on an occasional basis.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age-specified needs and to provider the care needed. Ages of patients served are neonate through geriatric.
- Contributes to a positive work environment and the overall team effort of the department.
DIRECTION/SUPERVISION REQUIREMENTS:
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Should be mobile and able to move about in department and throughout clinic.
- Ability to move supplies weighing from 10 to 65 pounds.
- Ability to maintain a fixed sitting position for 1-2 hours at a time.
- Visual acuity and manual dexterity sufficient to monitor and operate laboratory instrumentation.
- Ability to operate instruments as a standing height.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others directly and by phone.
- Ability to operate computer keyboard.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
- Continuous exposure to patient specimens.
- Occasional exposure to chemicals.
- Frequent light lifting of supplies and reagents.
OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS:
