CERTIFIED PHARMACY TECH

JOB SUMMARY

Pharmacy Technician assists Pharmacists in providing drug distribution, technical services and clinical services associated with the preparation, storage and dispensing of pharmaceuticals.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares unit-dose medications specific to patient needs including patient’s weight, allergies, and age (pediatric, neonate, adolescent, adult, and geriatric). Retrieves and delivers inpatient medication orders and supplies.
  • Prepares sterile products utilizing aseptic technique and USP 797 standards (to include the preparation, handling and disposal of bio-hazardous drugs).
  • Communicates effectively with other pharmacy employees, healthcare professionals, and patients while appropriately recognizing age (pediatric, neonate, adolescent, adult, and geriatric).
  • Maintains adequate drug inventories in pharmacy areas and patient care areas and notifies the appropriate personnel when shortages and/or outages noted.
  • Performs quality assurance/improvement audits.
  • Maintains a neat clean and organized work area.
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
  • Assists pharmacists in filling ambulatory prescriptions specific to patient needs including patient’s weight, allergies, and age (pediatric, neonate, adolescent, adult, and geriatric).
  • Assists in record keeping activities in any assigned area.
  • Demonstrates the spirit of the philosophy, mission, and values of the hospital through words and actions and implements them into departmental processes, programs, and the working environment.
  • Applies the principles and values of customer service and continuous quality improvement while performing day to day activities of the position.
  • Maintains and protects confidentiality regarding all aspects of patient care, personnel and strategic issues. Adheres to Confidentiality Policy.
  • Maintains positive working relationships and fosters cooperative work environment. Adheres to the hospital’s compliance program.
  • Displays honesty and mutual respect when communicating with peers and other departments.
  • Follows through on problems that may compromise effective job performance by using appropriate chain of command.
  • Adheres to safety practices and meets requirements of National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of an accredited Pharmacy Technician program required.
  • One (1) year related experience and/or training, preferably in a hospital setting.
  • 2 years hospital experience
  • IV certification
  • Pyxis experience or similar type of system
  • Comfortable in IV preparations, drips, TPNs

EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of an accredited Pharmacy Technician program required.

CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE

  • Current certification as a Pharmacy Technician from the State of Texas required.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Excellent organizational skills. Excellent writing and composition skills.
  • Excellent computer, database, and credentialing software skills.
  • Current BLS certification-American Heart Association
