Salary: $39,245.62

Reports to:  Dr. Maryann Mitts (Athletic Director) and Dr. Landon Adams (Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Life)

 

Job Summary:

  • Under the general direction of the Athletic Director, performs a wide range of difficult to complex coaching and administrative activities related to the development and implementation of a competitive volleyball program.  This includes, but is not limited to, developing a budget for volleyball program, recruiting and retaining student/athletes, development of practice sessions, scouting and strategy experience, and game modifications and adjustments.  The applicant should be timely in completing necessary paperwork to keep in compliance with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and American Midwest Conference (AMC) rules and regulations.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review the academic performance of each student-athlete, with special attention given to eligibility and progress towards graduation.
  • Accountable for roster goals and retention of roster numbers on an annual basis.  This includes but is not limited to coordinating recruitment of student athletes regionally and out of state by attending a wide array of recruitment events, tournaments and showcases.  
  • Coordinate on-campus recruiting visits for prospects and their families.
  • Responsible for creating a non-conference NAIA match schedule.
  • Responsible for the preparation, organization, and implementation of daily practice sessions emphasizing the fundamentals and the development of skill work.
  • Represent the college at American Midwest Conference (AMC) and NAIA meetings when appropriate.
  • Develop, implement, and participate in fundraising and community service activities for the volleyball program and for the overall athletics department.
  • Organize all travel including vehicle, food, and hotel accommodations.
  • Coordinate the purchasing of equipment, team gear, supplies and coaching materials for the program. 
  • Prepare volleyball athletes to compete at a collegiate level mentally and physically while creating a positive and encouraging culture.
  • Collaborate effectively with volleyball staff regarding recruiting, practice sessions, academics, travel, and other important aspects of the volleyball program.
  • Host youth volleyball camps to promote the Cottey volleyball program to the region while developing the sport of volleyball through the youth in the area.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of the Mission of Cottey, principles and practices of women’s sports as they apply to a college setting.  This includes supervision, communication, time management, public relations, program planning, budget development, facility and equipment management, office procedures, and business operations.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, work well with internal and external constituents, and properly handle emotional situations.
  • Effective written and verbal skills using various programs and software within the perimeters of the college, recruiting platforms, media relations, and social media arenas.  

 

Credentials and Experience:

  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree; master’s degree preferred
  • Three years of collegiate coaching experience or the equivalent; head coaching experience preferred.
  • Preference given to building the culture of a single sex institution, and the advancement of women in a collegiate sport program

 

Special Requirements:

  • Flexible schedule. Willing to work afternoons, evenings and weekends.
  • Willing to perform duties not specifically stated in the above description as requested by Athletic Director.
  • Position requires physical demands including cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility.
  • Must obtain a Class E driver’s license (can be obtained after start date) and willingness to use personal vehicle in the course of employment.
  • Successfully pass a criminal background check.

Supplemental duties requirements:

  • Coordinate the internal operations for the sports of Volleyball, Basketball, Flag Football, and Softball by maintaining the concession stands and gate for each of these programs.  This includes but is not limited to the following: Set up prior to and take down after each competition, inventory, management of workers, reporting financials to the Athletic Director, maintenance and monitoring of equipment.
  • Internal Operations include support at departmental fundraising and community service events, game day management responsibilities, and other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
