Position: Head Flag Football Coach
Reports to: Director of Athletics; Vice-President for Student Life and Enrollment Management
Job Summary: Cottey College is seeking an individual to fill a full-time position as head flag football coach. The position will begin as soon as the position is filled.
This position will require an individual to recruit, train, and provide guidance to members of the flag football team in a manner which promotes the academic, athletic, and social success of athletes and is consistent with the mission and goals of Cottey College. Additionally, the position performs tasks in all phases of the program including on-field coaching, overseeing the team’s strength and conditioning program, and game management. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, travel preparation, practice organization and evaluation, scouting reports, and tracking academic progress of student-athletes including class scheduling. This individual and their program is expected to follow the mission of the college and under National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) American Midwest Conference (AMC) rules and regulations. Once hired, the head coach will be responsible for other administrative duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
General Duties and Responsibilities
Represent Cottey College and the athletic department in a positive manner with a high degree of integrity and quality
- Promote and support Cottey College and its mission
- Promote and support Cottey College athletic program mission and goals
- Work atypical, yet flexible, business hours based on necessary presence at or reporting on sporting events conducted at night and on weekends and holidays
- Other duties as assigned
- Identify, evaluate, and recruit potential team members to Cottey College
- Retain current Cottey College students as team members through graduation
- Ensure the program meets annual roster size expectations
- Foster a high-quality culture within the flag football program promoting an emphasis on student success outcomes and general expectations of a collegiate athletic program
- Provide an environment conducive to a high level of academic performance by team members
- Promote the flag football program on a local, regional, and national level
- Provide leadership in the planning and operation of the flag football program
- Administer flag football program within the policies of Cottey College, NAIA, and the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, KCAC
- Organize and facilitate all daily practice sessions, game preparation, competition and off-season training
- Adhere to operating equipment and scholarship budgets as established by the athletic department and enrollment services
- Delegate responsibilities to assistants, managers, and team members
- Assist in promotion and public relations activities for the Cottey College athletic department including community service projects and fundraising events
- Select an assistant coach in cooperation with the Director of Athletics
- Supervise and evaluate assistant coach
- Schedule contests in accordance with the policies set forth by Cottey College
- Coordinate travel and meal considerations for away contests
- Organize and run summer camps to help young players improve their athletic skills and create positive exposure for Cottey College’s flag football program
- Promote discipline and sportsmanship behavior
- Evaluate and review the program, recommend changes and improvements to the athletic director
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Possess the knowledge of principles and practices of women's sports as they apply to a college setting. This includes supervision, communication, time-management, public relations, program planning, budget development, facility management, equipment management, office procedures, and business operations.
Skills in communicating effectively, verbal and written, with diverse audiences and in diverse settings. This includes proper handling of emotional situations, word processing, computer skills, financial aptitude, and the ability to work well with internal and external constituents.
Possession of a valid Missouri motor vehicle operator’s license (Class E) and willingness to use personal vehicle for trips involving recruitment/professional responsibilities in the course of employment if a College vehicle is unavailable.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Work is normally performed in a external (field) or internal (gymnasium) work environment
- Some physical effort required and the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- Very limited exposure to physical risk
- Some travel required
Credentials and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
- Previous experience in sports coaching, including working familiarity with the
rules and regulations of the NAIA
- Commitment to education of women a single-sex institution and the advancement of women in a collegiate sports program
