JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title:                     Crisis Intervention Specialist (full-time)

Reports to:                  Chief Program Officer

Supervises:                  None

Classification:             Full Time/Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Salary:                        $21.63/hr

Crisis Intervention Specialists provide emotional support, safety planning, information, and referral services to clients who call the 24-Hour Crisis Hotline, contact our agency through online chat, or seek services at our office. Crisis intervention clients include survivors of sexual violence, their friends and family members, and victim-serving professionals. During each interaction, Crisis Intervention Specialists assess the client’s immediate needs, offer an appropriate short-term intervention, and provide referrals to programs and resources that will promote long-term healing.

To help survivors who are struggling to meet their basic needs in the aftermath of an assault or other triggering event, Crisis Intervention Specialists distribute food, clothing, and transportation assistance to clients who visit the RCC’s office.

Participation in a 24/7 shift rotation, including holidays, evenings, and weekends, is mandatory.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Encourage clients to identify healthy coping skills and mobilize their support systems to resolve the immediate crisis and reduce the impact of trauma.
  • Based on the client’s stated or implied needs, offer referrals to services that are available at the Rape Crisis Center and in the community.
  • Provide general information on topics such as the dynamics of sexual violence, medical treatment options, and criminal justice system responses.
  • Provide crisis intervention, assessment, and appropriate follow-up care for clients who express suicidal ideation or threaten harm to others.
  • Follow professional guidelines, including compliance with HIPAA regulations and mandatory reporting responsibilities.
  • Dispatch advocates to hospitals, police stations, and other community sites for client accompaniment services.
  • Schedule counseling appointments for clients.
  • Distribute food, clothing, and transportation assistance to eligible clients, following the established policies for essential needs assistance.
  • Fulfill continuing education requirements, which may include attending workshops or seminars offered by the RCC or other local agencies, webinars, or online training options.
  • Participate in RCC staff meetings and team meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in human/social services field from an accredited college or university strongly preferred. An equivalent combination of education and work experience will also be considered.
  • Experience working with survivors of trauma is preferred.
  • Required to complete the 40-Hour Sexual Assault Training Program offered by the Rape Crisis Center within six months of employee’s start date.

Other Requirements and Preferences

  • Commitment to supporting and empowering survivors of sexual violence and working to build a safe and healthy community is required.
  • Knowledge of community resources in San Antonio and Bexar County is preferred.
  • Understanding of the dynamics of sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking is preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with supervisor, coworkers, and other members of our community’s sexual assault response team.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.
  • Strong computer skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, proficiency with email, and familiarity with database systems and video conferencing platforms.
  • All RCC staff members must pass a background check and drug screening prior to employment.
